The Solent, the straitbetween the Isle of Wight and mainland Hampshire is popular with sailing, partly due to the unique double high water. The event of the year must be cowes Week, but there are numerous events, large and small, just like the New Forest having a strong equestrian following.
The local fun event must be the Lymington Bath Race, the idea is to take an old bathtub, make it float, then decorate it. It used to be held in the harbour, then transferred to the salt water baths. Also in the fun event category are the raft races at Hythe and Mudeford.
Just across the Solent from Lymington lies Yarmouth, and used to host the Old Gaffers Festival, a celebration of gaff rigged sail. Sadly, the organiser has decided not to hold it again.
